The Durban Bid was all pulse, colour, texture and creativity. A top-notch delegation which included the Minister of Public Works, Thokozile Didiza, exuded the African welcoming spirit and so secured the rights to host the XXV UIA World Congress in Durban. [ read more ]

The UIA World Congress and General Assembly is held every three years and Member Sections bid for the privilege of hosting the event. The selection is made six years in advance. The main objective of the Congress is to provide architects with an opportunity to participate in a series of culturally and professionally enriching events based on a specific theme. The UIA is a non-governmental organization uniting the professional associations of architects in over 110 countries internationally. Founded in 1948, it represents approximately 1,300,000 architects.

The South African Institute of Architect's bid theme for the UIA 2014 Congress was entitled "MultipliCITY": World Future. The diverse and multilayered nature of Durban will guide the Congress as a living laboratory of multiplicity in action and co-existence.

We invite discussion on the challenges facing world future and focus on Durban as a microcosm of these challenges and celebrate African solutions which embrace diversity and pluralism.

We look to interventions which recognize architect as 'agent', but also recognizes the 'agency' of ordinary people: how people create places and spaces and develop a popular urbanism. And at how social solutions weave together with technical innovation to address challenges of resource constraint and environmental protection.

MultipliCITY is celebrated as an antidote to globalization
MultipliCITY is a form of latitude, allowing different approaches to co-exist
MultipliCITY allows us to develop richer responses to the challenges facing urbanists and architects.

Durban: a post-colonial, post apartheid, Afro-Asian melting pot in which residues, stands and networks of diverse cultures and systems overlap, clash and co-exist which tremendous force and vitality. What a place to host a UIA congress!
